Howdy!

I'm Claudia and I write about the environment, climate, people, and everything in between. Find a little bit more about me below.

Claudia Steiner
Science Writer Extraordinaire

I grew up in the land of beautiful beaches, pine forests, and rolling hills. Also suburbs. This land is called New Jersey and I credit its rich diversity of ecosystems and interminably opinionated people for making me the person I am today.

I left my hometown for Washington, DC in 2017, ready to entrench myself in the halls of power. I became passionate about environmental justice and fixated on climate policy. I split my time between international climate coursework, environmental research, and then ultimately, in a communications role for an environmental justice nonprofit.

All of these experiences underscored the urgency and complexity of the compounding ecological crises we find ourselves in. But none laid out a roadmap for me. Until I found myself writing again, for work, for community organizations, and for myself. It reminded me of the thing that has always made me feel most powerful: immortalizing our constantly changing world into stories.

These stories brought me to the Science Communication master's program at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Here, I'm doing what I love, writing for the people about climate change, and learning how to do it better from world-class journalists. I've interned at the Monterey Herald and Science magazine so far and have gotten to publish stories in Eos, Mongabay, and KneeDeep Times. I'm updating this site with all my clips so you can follow along as I find my niche in this crucial yet underfunded industry.

I have a lot to learn about environmental storytelling. But one thing that's already clear to me is that from coast to coast, our problems are similar. And our solutions thrive in daylight.
